about

In the spring of 2022 I began a series of outdoor improvisational spontaneous electro-acoustic 'performances' incorporating new interests in modular electronics with my acoustic instruments, most often an Appalachian dulcimer with contact mics.

I had musically been in 'pause' for several months spending time with old interests in analog photography that returned during the pandemic. I had been dabbling with modular synths/electronics with curiosity and the encouragement of friend and fellow artist Chris Roberts who I purchased my first modular from, an After Later Audio uBurst and to give it life, I ordered a DIY power supply kit which brought back the joys of soldering I had done a few years before in another chapter of musical electronics.

In May I finally stopped dancing with what to buy when I stumbled onto the Koma Electronik Field Kit and suddenly the clouds parted and I connected, realizing a path to interacting my instrument playing with knobs if you will. This device integrated a mixer, radio band, LFO and envelope follower among other things. I figured out mobile power and began this series.

I have since added which is in this performance a second oscillator also built from a DIY kit. As I have grown with this series I have more and more felt the environmental sounds taking place as I play are part of the experience. In post I blend the video 'air' recording with the direct field recording for that purpose.

On a personal level though I don't know how I will feel in February but at the moment in this series I feel these field recordings are a response to Covid and a desire I still feel for social space.

A video of a portion of this set is on my YouTube channel at youtu.be/hcFYNqO5LwM.

about

Jim Goodin New York

I used to think of myself as a musician but as time goes I think of myself more a sound maker.

I've always come to music with some degree of struggle, at times worrying I was 'tone deaf' and often going to great lengths to confirm that I wasn't. I'm not sure that ever mattered.

I play at several instruments, lap steel guitar and others, modular synth, tape loops and Pure Data.
